Cavalier News for the Week of May 7

posted May 7, 2018, 11:48 AM by East Burke High School
For Seniors:  Senior Awards will be on Friday, May 25 at 9 a.m. and the Senior Party will be that same afternoon beginning at 12:30.

Student Behavior Expectations:  With only 24 days left of school, students start developing a condition educators refer to as “Summeritis”.  Symptons include a lack of effort, not completing assignments, not following directions, not studying for tests, skipping class or school, and many others.  We would like to ask that you have a conversation with your child about the importance of finishing strong.

Keys To Life Program:

On May 24, 2018, East Burke High School will be hosting The Keys to Life program. National statistics show that every 15 minutes, someone is killed or seriously injured in an alcohol-related automobile crash.

The long-term objective of the Keys to Life program is to heighten awareness of the consequences of underage alcohol use with an emphasis on and around special occasions and events. The Keys to Life program is aimed at high school and college students to increase their awareness of the dangers of drinking alcohol, particularly during the prom and graduation seasons.

Volunteer students are pre-selected prior to the day of the program. Every 15 minutes throughout the school day, a heartbeat is played over the school's PA system and the Grim Reaper appears in a classroom to take one of the volunteer students away. These students' faces are painted gray and they are provided a black t-shirt to symbolize their deaths. The students are then escorted back to class by the school resource officer and their obituary read aloud to the class. To reinforce their "death," the student may not speak to or interact with classmates for the remainder of the school day.

The mock car accident scene will take place at 2 p.m. at Cavalier Stadium and are made to look very realistic. The mock accident scenes are complete with simulated casualties, emergency services personnel, news reporters, and arrests of drunk drivers. The scenes are made to look as real as possible so that the students will experience what it would be like to see their friend zipped up in a body bag or their classmate arrested for drunk driving.

Dress Code Reminder:  Warmer weather has finally arrived and student dress is changing.  The Burke County Board of Education policy states that all shorts must be at least mid thigh in length.  Any student violating this policy will be expected to change.

Cav-A-Gears Fundraiser:  The Cav-A-Gears have a fundraiser next Tuesday (May 8th) at Pie Five in Hickory.  Pie Five will donate 25% of sales from 5 to 8 to our robotics team. Please come out and support us.  Go to the attached link and click on the commit to eat link if you are planning to participate. This will make sure our meal doesn't get cancelled.   https://www.groupraise.com/events/60755

Prom Tickets:  Tickets cost $40 for EBHS Juniors & Seniors and $45 for guests.  Tickets will be sold now through Friday, May 18th in room 313 during all 4 lunches and before/after school.

FREE Athletic Physicals:  Carolina's Health Care Blue Ridge is offering free physicals to all middle and high school student-athletes on Saturday, May 19.  These physicals will be good for the 2018/2019 sports seasons. You must register online at https://athleteatheart.org/BlueRidgeVald.aspx by May 16.  If you have any questions you can email our athletic trainer Sara Woods at swoods@burke.k12.nc.us.  See the attached file for more information.
